| Villanueva's journey has him back at Roosevelt
There are spider webs not nearly as entangled or twisted as the strange odyssey involving left-handed pitcher Martin Villanueva of Los Angeles Roosevelt. In January, Villanueva, a two-time All-City selection, dropped out of school and left for Mexico after being told a contract he had signed with the Mexico City Red Devils made him ineligible for high school sports. The Red Devils play in the Mexican summer league and are under the jurisdiction of minor league baseball. .
Melting ice gives D.M. water lousy flavor
Stubborn river ice has made conditions perfect for an annual rite of late winter in Des Moines: lousy tasting water. Des Moines Water Works officials have been forced to pump more chlorine into tap water to counter high ammonia levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, two major sources of drinking water. Randy Beavers, interim general manager of the utility, said the problem is the leaves and other plant material that decompose in the rivers when they are covered with ice. .

You won't see many off-the-shelf costumes here. You'll spy your share of drag queens and naked men wrapped in Saran Wrap, but you might also see nine Brady Brunch look-alikes, their heads propped in faux television sets, a herd of cows or the Pope. One alumna fondly recalled a partygoer, wearing soft foam airbrushed to look like a slice of bread, who belly-flopped from a staircase and was promptly followed by his friends dressed as lettuce, tomato and a slice of ham. Men's Track and Field Expects Big Performances at BIG EAST ...
NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 22, 2008) - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team enters this weekend's BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Armory in New York City with great expectations of success. The events will start on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the field events. The heptathlon will begin at 11:00 a.m. and track events will start at 12:00 p.m. On Sunday, the heptathlon will begin at 8:00 a.m., field events will begin at 9:00 a.m. and track events will start at 11:30 a.m. One way to predict how the meet might turn out is to look at the qualifying lists and see which athletes have run the best times or have the longest distances in their events. However, head coach Greg Roy cautions reading to much into those lists. "You can look at those (qualifying) lists a little bit, but in the end you have to throw it way." said Roy.
High-tech tinkerers on the rise
The reason you're going to see more and more people doing it is because they've always wanted to be able to fiddle - but the technology was daunting." That's changing, as do-it-yourself gadgetry becomes more accessible to people who have never even held a soldering iron. Paul Badger, an instructor at the Rhode Island School of Design who runs Modern Device Co. out of his house, creates cheap microcontroller boards, called "Bare Bones Boards," that take off from a popular microcontroller called Arduino. Badger's art students work on things like a wig that can flip up and down and back and forth, or experiment with lighting; the Arduino microcontroller is often used in other artistic products, such as clothing melded with computing, or basic robotics for artists.
