Perchlorate pact at hand - at last

Rialto and San Bernardino are finally on the cusp of settling their portion of the perchlorate-cleanup lawsuit Rialto filed in 2004.

That suit named not just San Bernardino, but the U.S. Department of Defense and some 40 companies that Rialto wants to hold responsible for the perchlorate contamination in its groundwater. The federal lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial in October, but if county supervisors approve the settlement that Rialto City Council signed onto last week, the county will no longer be among the defendants.

That's good. We hate to see local governments suing each other, pitting one set of taxpayers' money against another in legal fees, instead of working out a suitable accommodation. In this case, far better to spend money on cleaning up the contamination than on dueling lawyers.

plagues Delaware's Inland Bays

Improving wastewater treatment and reducing other point-source polluters has decreased phosphorous and nitrogen levels in the Inland Bays. Still, for more than 15 years, monitors have seen no decrease in nutrient pollutants in the bays. Of the three Inland Bays, only Rehoboth Bay is meeting recommended allowable levels of pollution.

The members of the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) to the Center for the Inland Bays (CIB) heard an update on water quality as part of their meeting Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) collects samples from the Inland Bays four times a year, measures the concentration of pollutants and then issues data in five-year sets. Rehoboth Bay meets the state’s standards for both phosphorous and nitrogen, known as total maximum daily loads (TMDLS).

McCain's character beyond question

Huckabee doesn't believe in evolution and the Mormon believes Jesus hung out with Indians in New York and will 'return to earth' in Missouri. My Republican Party has gone wacko.

El Jefe wrote on Feb 3, 2008 9:28 PM:Character? What a character is right! This is a guy that while he was still married to his first wife met his current wife & started to court the new girl. McCain dumped his first wife who had become paralyzed in an accident & then married the millionaire model. At least Romney earned his millions himself, he didn't have to marry a fortune & Romney is still married to his first wife.
